Where
A “20% off, plus an extra 10% at checkout” promotion sounds like 30% off. It is not. The second discount is applied to the price after the first, so you multiply the remaining fractions rather than adding the reductions:
Order does not matter for percentage discounts - multiplication is commutative. It does matter when a fixed dollar amount is mixed in. A $20 coupon applied before a 25% discount saves you less than applying it after, so read the terms carefully.

Multiply the price by the discount as a decimal to get the savings, then subtract. For 25% off $120: 120 × 0.25 = $30 saved, leaving $90. A faster route is to multiply by the remaining fraction directly: 120 × 0.75 = $90.
No, and this is the most common discount mistake. 20% off followed by 10% off is not 30% off. The second coupon applies to the already-reduced price, so you multiply the remainders: 0.80 × 0.90 = 0.72, which is 28% off. Stacked percentages always total less than their sum.
In the US, sales tax applies to the discounted price for store discounts and store coupons. Manufacturer coupons are treated differently in some states, where tax may be calculated on the pre-coupon price because the retailer is reimbursed. This calculator applies tax to the discounted total.

Not necessarily. 50% off an inflated 'original' price can cost more than 20% off a genuine one. Compare final prices across retailers rather than discount percentages, and be aware that many advertised list prices exist mainly to make the discount look larger.
